Medicare Payment Cuts to Commence

On Monday, April 1, a 2 percent across-the-board cut in Medicare provider payments will take effect due to the sequestration that Congress recently implemented.  The sequester will be in effect for nine years, unless Congress and the White House reach a deficit reduction agreement that replaces it.

Unless Congress and the White House reach a budget deal before billions in spending cuts kick in later this week, federal agencies will be need to make tough decisions about how to comply with the cuts. The nearly $85 billion in across-the-board cuts this year to defense and other federal spending, known as the sequester, will begin Friday, March 1. Both parties agreed to the plan in 2011 after failing to reach a deal on less severe spending cuts.
